If you have suffered an accident whilst in a publicly owned or privately owned premises, for example a house, hotel, train station, council buildings etc, you may be eligible to make a claim.
Under the Occupier's Liability Act 1957 an occupier (i.e. the owner of the building) owes what is known as a "duty of care" to the public. This means that they have a duty to ensure that members of the public are reasonably safe whilst they are in their premises. If they do not take measures to ensure the safety of visitors and an accident occurs as a result, they may be liable to pay out compensation.
